Anthony Martial to miss Premier League season over injury, Erik ten Hag left to make major decisions Cristiano Ronaldo has more chances to play

Erik ten Hag might have some major decisions to make today as he prepares his side for the opening day of the Premier League season on Sunday.

Manchester United face Brighton at Old Trafford s in a 2pm kick-off as the Ten Hag era begins. The Dutchman has a major decision to make as to who plays up front.

Anthony Martial, who enjoyed a positive pre-season under Ten Hag, will miss the game through injury. This could open the door for Cristiano Ronaldo, although he has only played 45 minutes this summer.

Elsewhere, United are growing increasingly frustrated in their pursuit of Frenkie de Jong. MEN Sport revealed that the Reds are annoyed that they have been unable to secure the deal for the midfielder due to the situation between De Jong, Barcelona and the player’s deferred wages..

Erik ten Hag explains how he’s changing Manchester United culture

Erik ten Hag wants his new Manchester United side to keep their high standards in training up throughout the season to build a winning mentality.

Ten Hag has enjoyed a positive and productive pre-season in which, despite off-field distractions, he has already made a clear impact on United. It’s been a tough summer for the players who have been put through their paces and not been allowed any mistakes without their new coach pulling them up on — which has led to the side already looking much sharper, fitter and well-drilled on the pitch.

Just how much the team have taken on board will be revealed on Sunday when United’s Premier League campaign gets under way against Brighton. But Ten Hag won’t be allowing the early standards he’s set slip when the season begins.

OPINION – Donny van de Beek could have a different role at Manchester United after pre-season form

It was billed as the summer when Donny van de Beek would finally find his feet at Manchester United, but so far, it has been about as successful as the summer of George in Seinfeld. There were lofty hopes and dreams for the United midfielder under the guidance of former Ajax mentor Erik ten Hag, though there has little on show in pre-season to justify the hype.

Van de Beek remains a popular figure at United, but all of the excitement surrounding him spawns from what he might be capable of doing, rather than what he is doing.

The 25-year-old was a key part of the Ajax side that achieved huge success under Ten Hag back in 2019, but since then his stock has gradually dwindled and he now enters a season that will be make-or-break for him at Old Trafford.

Jamie Carragher makes Manchester United top four prediction and Europa League claim

Jamie Carragher has told Manchester United they should be targeting this season’s Europa League as a way of getting back into the Champions League.

United get the new season under way on Sunday as they host Brighton at Old Trafford, with Erik ten Hag taking charge of his first competitive game. The former Ajax boss will be aiming for a much-improved campaign, following what was a disastrous year for the club.

Having held title ambitions going into the 2021/22 season, United fell woefully short as they had to settle for a Europa League spot. The competition does, however, present them with another potential path back into the Champions League.

Manchester United predicted starting line-up vs Brighton

Summer signing Lisandro Martinez could make his full Manchester United debut against Brighton at Old Trafford – and Cristiano Ronaldo is also in line for a surprise start on Sunday afternoon.

Ronaldo, 37, missed the pre-season tour to Thailand and Australia due to a family issue amid speculation surrounding his Old Trafford future. Along with his agent Jorge Mendes, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner held crunch discussions with Erik ten Hag and other United figures at their Carrington base last week.

A definitive update has yet to be provided – but Ronaldo is still a United player for now and has been busy putting in the hard yards after going without so much training this summer. He played 45 minutes in the last friendly match against Rayo Vallecano and might have to lead the line for the impending Premier League opener.
