Man United play Omonia Nicosia in the Europa League tonight and we’ll bring you live updates from the match in Cyprus.

Manchester United take on Omonia Nicosia away in Cyprus in the Europa League on Thursday night.

United were defeated in their opening Europa League group match against Real Sociedad, but Erik ten Hag’s side bounced back to comfortably beat FC Sheriff 2-0 last month thanks to goals from Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo in Chisinau.

Ten Hag will be aware of the importance of winning the Europa League group and he has picked a strong side, with Ronaldo and Casemiro starting the game against Omonia, who are managed by former Celtic boss Neil Lennon.

Omonia are currently fourth in the Cypriot first division and they have lost both of their Europa League matches this season. Regarding team news, Raphael Varane, Harry Maguire, Donny van de Beek and Aaron Wan-Bissaka are all sidelined with injuries.

That quartet have not travelled to Cyprus, which means Victor Lindelof and Lisandro Martinez are the only centre-backs in the squad.

Fair dos to Ten Hag retaining Malacia. The easy decision would’ve been to give Shaw a start but Malacia is Ten Hag’s signing, represents the future in his eyes and it was one abysmal half that should not define his United career. The rest of the back four picked itself.

This is such a crammed month that Ten Hag is going to have to rotate effectively at some stage. If United win both games against Omonia and Sociedad win both games against Sheriff then the group stage is practically concluded, other than who finishes first and second.

United should be treating the Europa League seriously. It’s a winnable competition, they have not lifted silverware since 2017 and triumphing in the competition secures Champions League qualification. But in a transitional season, certain players need to be protected and Goodison on Sunday looks tricky.

Elanga will be the deliberate error in that team news tidbit. I suppose some conspiratorial online fans will now regard Elanga as a team-leaking mole when he isn’t.

Martial’s bench role makes a mockery of the rationale behind Ronaldo’s unused status on Sunday. Martial got minutes, scored twice and is on the bench. Ronaldo didn’t play a minute and starts.

Starting Christian Eriksen again highlights his importance to United. In Ten Hag’s eyes, he is undroppable and rightly so, but United need to be mindful of his durability and he shouldn’t be starting at home to Omonia next week.
