Man Utd transfer news: Talks about Frenkie de Jong latest and Man Utd vs Brighton news

All the very latest Manchester United news, views and transfer updates from the Manchester Evening News.

Manchester United are now just two days away from the start of their 2022/23 Premier League campaign.

United finished a disappointing sixth last season, but welcome Brighton to Old Trafford on Sunday in what will mark manager Erik ten Hag’s first competitive game in charge. The Dutchman will be determined to get off to a winning start and build on the momentum that has been created during pre-season.

The visit of the Seagulls could see Ten Hag hand out three United debuts, with summer signings Tyrell Malacia, Lisandro Martinez and Christian Eriksen all champing at the bit to bag a starting berth. But the number of potential debutants for Sunday’s clash is not expected to increase, with no further deals understood to be close to being wrapped up.

United continue to remain in talks with Barcelona about the prospect of signing midfielder Frenkie de Jong. It is almost three months since the Reds first registered an interest in his signature and they are still yet to make a breakthrough.

Meanwhile, Ten Hag will speak to the media today at 1:30pm to look ahead to the season opener, and the Manchester Evening News will have every angle covered.

TODAY’S BIG TALKING POINT: Can United show just how ambitious they are ahead of the transfer window closing? Have your say here.

OPINION: Glazers must address two errors they’ve made in United ownership

When a fan protest has its own dedicated Wikipedia page, you know it had the desired effect.

Of course, the real intention of Manchester United supporters who chose to protest outside Old Trafford and the team’s Lowry Hotel on May 2nd 2021, was to get the club’s clash with Liverpool called off — and they achieved that, too.

Looking back, ask any fan involved with those protests more than a year ago and, with the benefit of hindsight, they’ll dismiss the impact of the European Super League — quickly suggested and scrapped in even speedier style — as the prompt for the unrest. The real smoking gun was the way the Glazers were (and still are) running United, even if the Super League played its part in igniting the fury.
