Qatar 2022: France complains to FIFA after Griezmann’s goal was disallowed

France file complaint to FIFA over disallowed Griezmann goal

France has filed a complaint with FIFA regarding the decision to disallow Antoine Griezmann’s late goal in France’s 1-0 World Cup loss to Tunisia on Wednesday.

In the eighth minute of stoppage time at Education City Stadium, Griezmann thought he had cancelled out Wahbi Khazri’s goal when he volleyed home.

After the jubilation subsided, referee Michael Conger disallowed Griezmann’s goal due to an offside violation.

When the pass from Aurelien Tchouameni took a deflection off a Tunisian defender and the Atletico Madrid forward fired in, it was determined that he was offside.

The French Football Federation (FFF) disagrees, arguing that it was improper for the goal to be disallowed because play had already resumed when VAR intervened.

“We are writing a complaint after Antoine Griezmann’s goal was, in our opinion, wrongly disallowed,” said a widely released statement from the FFF on Wednesday.

“This complaint has to be filed within 24 hours after the final whistle.”

At Education City Stadium, Khazri’s outstanding goal snapped France’s nine-game winning streak in the competition that had dated back to the 2014 quarterfinals.

In the end, the outcome in Group D didn’t matter much because France still advanced as the group’s top seed and Australia finished second after defeating Denmark 1-0.

If France is successful in their appeal and the result is changed to 1-1, the group’s final point totals will change, but none of the four teams’ standings will.
